 "Complete and utter junk....." 2010-02-06
By W. Wirta
I did the research, read all the reviews (including CNETs glowing review on the features and picture), and the BD390 seemed like the logical choice. I thought if I was going to buy a top line Blu Ray player, I might as well spend a little extra to get one of the better units.

But as part of the research, I kept coming across the the one star ratings, the gripes about the quality and lack of service - but these seemed to be in the minority compared to some of the great 5 star reviews. So, I decided to make the plunge and get the BD 390 but I opted for the SquareTrade warranty just in case. But in the back of my mind the doubt still lingered...

Well, I wish I could give you the pros and cons on the features, the picture, sound, etc...but...

The unit didn't even turn on - it wouldn't even power up. Comical service calls to LG (did you try another outlet? Is the cord plugged into the machine?) just reinforced what I already knew...LG is a sub-quality brand. The cheap parts, the lack of QC, you can roll the dice and hope for the best like I did but in the end buying sub-par brands will always be a risk. I've bought tons of electronics over the years, and the Sonys, Panasonics, Denons and Yamahas of the world will also have issues with some their units occasionally since no product line defect rate is 0%, but my experience has been stellar with all of these makes. LG has a reputation has a second tier company, and they certainly didn't disappoint there. For me, however, it's a valuable lesson learned about sticking with what's worked and listening to that little voice telling me it's a mistake call...

Since you're reading this review, you're considering the BD 390. That little voice talking to you now?...do yourself a favor and listen to it.

Complete and utter junk - the product and the company.

"Defective after only 90 days" 2010-02-05
By Jeff D (RPV, CA United States)
When working, this player does a good job. But after only 90 days, the LG player no longer plays any regular DVD's and is struggling to play any Blu-ray discs. Based on other comments here and the limited warranty, I will avoid LG products from now on.

 "LG Blu-Ray player" 2010-02-05
By J. France (San Ramon, CA)
Pros: Easy setup, seamless WPA2 TKIP/AES wireless connectivity, incremental 12 step zoom to expand picture to

fill as much of screen as is wanted (and great graphic to show you what will be cut off hrozontally if you expand the picture vertically).

Cons: Does not remember resolution setting; for 1080i televisions, the TV must be on and the LG selected before

powering the LG on. I don't know if this is true with 1080p televisions.

Excellent job streaming movies wirelessly in Hi-Def. Remarkable really, and far exceeded my expectations. I had originally bought a new Samsung Blu-Ray player which we kept for 3 weeks, but the Samsung lacked the ability to remove the black horizontal lines on top and bottom associated with movies produced in a slightly different aspect ratio than the television. No "screen fit" (Samsung's terms) for their Blu-Ray players, but present on all their standard DVD players. The family wanted me to return it so I bought the LG instead. LG allows you to incrementally trim (or zoom) as much of the film as you want to fit as much of the screen as you want. The only issue with the LG is that it defaults to 1080p, and the television that I have it hooked up to is 1080i. While I can set the resolution to 1080i in setup, and on the fly with the remote, the LG never remembers it so I have to reset the resolution every time we play a movie. Not a big deal and takes only seconds, but we did not need to do this with the Samsung Blu-Ray. Also very easy to share pics, etc. that are on your network computer with the LG so that you can view them on the big screen.

"worked well for 3 months" 2010-02-04
By Philip Greenspun (Cambridge, MA USA)
I like the streaming Netflix feature, which is a good thing because that's the only thing that this player is good for anymore. If you put a DVD into the drive it says "No disc". Powering the machine off and then back on doesn't help, but a full unplug/plug in seems to make it more likely to read a disk. Mostly, though, the machine cannot play any physical media.

"LG Super Multi BluRay Optical Drive A Solid, Multi-format Performer" 2009-12-04
By Wavey Davey (Southern CA, USA)
I built a new PC tower back in April 2009, and I needed a SATA II BluRay/DVD+/-RW reader/writer to go along with my Pioneer DVR-110 IDE/ATA Region Free optical drive so I picked the LG Super Multi Blue GGW-HG20L (as it's known loosely) to fill the bill, and it hasn't disappointed me at all. I had never owned an LG optical drive before, but if this drive is representative of the features and quality of LG optical drives across their range of products it won't be the last. I needed to be able to back up my AppleTV/iTunes video library on BluRay discs (I opted for the 25GB BD-R discs for this assignment) and that was no small order, but this optical drive rose to the task and successfully burned some 1500+/-GB worth of movies into storage and my mission got accomplished with little fanfare.

In addition I utilize DVD-RAM discs for my photography backups (hard backup...what smart users utilize vs using HD's and other types of storage for precious items), and I've been slowly but surely accumulating a vast collection of stock and literal photography on the DVD-RAM discs this year. This LG drive has been able to burn multiple 4.4GB discs without failure, problems, or caveats to doing such a job. This drive supports every type of media available for writing and reading, which I didn't know at the time of purchase but it was a pleasant surprise to find this out! This drive can read and write EVERYTHING there is, so there's no point in listing everything, just take it from me that from DVD-RAM to every type of DVD+/-RW disc, and BR disc, this one can do it all...there are no exclusions.

There's a nice 2048MB buffer in place at all times that acts as the write and read-to frame buffer mechanism so that it doesn't get bogged down when doing massive reads and writes, the industry standard for buffers so that is good also ("buffer under-run protection"). The GGW-H20L has yet to have a firmware upgrade of any kind (that I am aware of) to enhance this or that feature, so I guess the the engineers at LG have been pleased with this EOL product and chose to not support it further than the OEM firmware, thus far...who knows about down the road.

One of the different features of the drive is that the status indicator light is BLUE, just like its BR capabilities, instead of green, so that took some getting used to at first but now I don't react to it when it flashes, and it will flash a lot during writes and reads. The finish of the drive is like "Piano Black" instead of a flat or typically dull to non-glossy finish like you get with Pioneer optical drives, so that's a bit different also. Last but not least, one must not forget that this optical drive is SATA/SATA II all the way, ie it is NOT an IDE/ATAPI optical drive so don't purchase it if you don't have a SATA connection in the case!

All in all I gave this optical drive a solid 5 Stars rating for features and performance, and after using it virtually the whole year of 2009 it has not failed my assignments once, it has performed up to and beyond my wildest dreams in terms of BR and conventional disc applications, especially the DVD-RAM writing which I need all the time, both for work and personal uses. If you have occasion to purchase one of these or its successor optical drives from LG don't hesitate because they make a quality product and it shows with this optical drive's abilities, performance, and features. I have always been a Pioneer man for my optical drives, but this LG product has opened my mind up to their products after using it this year for so many important things.

Now if I can just find some Region Free firmware for the drive that doesn't screw up its abilities I'll be 100% sold on LG products! I always have the Pioneer DVR-110 v1.41 (Dangerous Bros!) firmware to do my bidding with respect to Region Free status, but it would be nice if the LG drive could also be unlocked so I could have backup in this respect, but even without it being Region Free it's just a stellar performer and I could not be happier with it...it's that good of a product, and you, too, won't be disappointed if you get one.

"Not Compatible with Windows 7" 2009-11-15
By Christopher M. Veal (Seattle, WA)
I was installing Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit. The installation stopped, asking me for the drivers for this DVD player. When I went online, I learned that there ARE NO WINDOWS 7 DRIVERS FOR THIS PRODUCT! Considering that I bought this drive just a few months ago with the purpose of running it on Windows 7, I am quite upset at this fact. In fact, from what I'm reading, the manufacturer has no intent of ever releasing Windows 7 drivers for this product because the product is "obsolete".

"Excellent drive, but beware if installing it in a Lenovo desktop PC" 2009-07-26
By John T (Phoenix, AZ)
I've been using this LG blu-ray burner since last summer. I purchased it primarily to archive HD videos from my HD camcorder to blu-ray disc. As well as burn HD recordings made with my Hauppauge HD PVR. Up until today, I've had zero issues with the drive and would have given it 5 stars. Suddenly of all the things the eject button on this drive has become an issue after upgrading to a new Lenovo desktop PC.

I originally installed the drive last summer in an HP Media Center duo-core PC that I've had for two years. The HP has a snap on front bezel with its own optical drive eject buttons. You press the eject button on the front bezel and it in turn exerts pressure on the drive's eject button to eject the tray. I upgraded to a new Lenovo K230 Quad Core desktop PC which similar to the HP, doesn't give you direct access to the LG drive's eject button, instead providing eject buttons on the front bezel. Last night I switched out the dvd burner that came with the Lenovo with the LG blu-ray burner from the HP PC. The install went smoothly. But when I booted up the Lenovo into Vista and pressed the eject button on the K230's front bezel to insert a disc, the tray wouldn't eject. The drive was installed correctly as it shows up in Vista just fine and I'm able to perform a soft-eject by right-clicking the drive in My Computer. It's just the Lenovo's bezel eject button won't work with this drive.

Part of the problem is LG decided to get a bit too fancy and gave this drive an eject button unlike most you'll find on other dvd and cd burners. The LG has a slim eject button that barely protudes above the silver strip that runs across the front of the drive. The Lenovo is expecting a more typical rectangular eject button with more height, so it's unable to exert any pressure on the LG's button. And the LG eject button seems to be a bit to the left of where the Lenovo expects it to be. My HP PC had no problem with the height and location of the LG drive eject, so I partly blame Lenovo for the design of their bezel eject buttons as well. I was able to find a workaround. I can get the tray to eject by using a small pen-sized screwdriver to exert slight downward pressure on the bezel plastic right above where the LG eject button is located. Or using the "soft eject" within Windows will also work by right-clicking the drive and selecting Eject. It is an incovenience that I now have to resort to these workarounds to just get the drive to eject! This may just be an issue with this particular line of Lenovo desktop PC I purchased, but do keep it in mind if you're planning to use this drive in a Lenovo.

 "LG GGW-H20L Blu-Ray Burner" 2009-07-09
By Peter P. Strawn (Leesburg, VA USA)
The LG drive installed easily in my Dell Inspiron 530 and was up and running within 10 minutes. Thankfully LG included the data cable to mate to the motherboard which prevented any delays in buying additional hardware. The drive was immediately recognized by Windows Vista on power up, drivers loaded, and ready for use. The included software is sparse but functional. I would buy this drive again or recommend it to a friend.

 "Amazing technology" 2010-01-31
By J. Berger (USA)
The LG LHB977 really represents a quantum leap forward in my home entertainment experience.

My previous system was the Samsung HT-Z310T upconverting DVD/surround package. It was no slouch, with many attractive features. I got it because it was a cheap way to sit out the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battles and wait for the technology to mature. And it has matured, indeed.

BLU RAY and DVD Playback

The actual blu-ray playback and picture is incredible even beyond my expectations. Overall viewing experience is shockingly great in both picture and sound. My only complaints are that the BD-Live features are spotty (a low priority for me), and I found the controls slightly non-intuitive and inconsistent from disc to disc. For instance, it took me a while to figure out that for some discs you can use the "disc menu" key, while the main key on most blu-ray is actually "title."

DVDs look incredible, depending on the quality of the transfer and whether the source was filmed digitally. For instance, the Matrix Revolutions on DVD looked incredible. The upconverting feature here is a huge step up from the Samsung.

For both blu and DVD digital films look best. I got a couple disks with the unit for sampling, including old favorites remastered and newer stuff. The old favorites were amazing but the two best-looking prints by far were Star Trek (2009) and Spiderman 3. Newer movies really shine in this format, but a remastered version of the 1954 Godzilla was also a revelation.

SURROUND SOUND

The sound quality and volume are both outstanding. Quality is below-audiophile but still excellent. I can be fussy about these things, but not to the point that I feel comfortable spending thousands of additional dollars on multiple components to get the better sound. If I had unlimited funds, I might consider such a move, but the sound on this unit is truly impressive, and the value is even more so. I know some people like a louder system -- I find it hard to imagine enjoying a movie on this unit louder than 75% volume -- at that level we had to raise our voices significantly to hear each other. And I live in a city in a multiple-unit housing so even if I wanted to go louder, I couldn't. The pre-set sound configurations are good, I would have liked some more settings to play with on the audio or an EQ.

INPUTS/OUTPUTS

You can take just about any input with this unit. In addition to optical, component, coaxial and two HDMI inputs, you also get an AM/FM radio. Outputs are adequate as advertised but a couple of extra options would be welcome. For instance, I have a TV in my office which shares a wall with the TV in the living room. I'd like a simple way to run video AND audio to both TVs from the LG LHB977. I have an HDMI splitter, which is OK, but if you switch on HDMI audio-passthrough you lose the ability to employ some of the better audio features (basically resulting in diminished surround effect). Why must this be? Video component output to my second TV won't work if the main TV is hooked up. The benefit of a dual connection diminishes the more buttons I have to press to make it work -- in short, this unit won't make it any easier to connect multiple TVs.

USB input was a bit flaky. I couldn't get it to do much that was interesting but it will run pictures. I don't have an iPod so I can't comment on that part.

NETFLIX and ONLINE

All I can say about this feature is -- wow. I weighed whether the Netflix streaming was a feature worth paying for, given that I could stream on my computer and the quality there was only OK. I had also seen reviews pointing out that all or most Netflix streaming content is SD. As it turns out there is a LOT of HD content available for streaming (including movies and all five season of Lost). You can tell the difference between this "HD" streaming and 720p through the cable box (and it doesn't even touch blu-ray), but it's damn close and FAR exceeded my expectations. The SD content, for the most part, also looks fairly good -- below DVD quality but not a lot.

Roxio Cinema Now also had a good picture but I'm not in a big hurry to pay for their content relative to getting Netflix for free. I can imagine using it once in a while. YouTube looks like you would expect on a big TV screen. Pandora Radio is excellent and fun, and there's a music retouch audio configuration that makes it sound pretty sharp.

USER INTERFACE

This was a weird combination of very easy to use and a handful of very non-intuitive things. There's a Home Screen which gives you easy access to most features, but accessing files on USB was spotty. The easy intuitive Home Menu omits what it perhaps the most commonly used feature -- the ability to switch inputs. Most people are going to want to use this unit for surround sound while watching TV in addition to disks. To switch to the TV (HDMI 1), there's no onscreen menu item. You have to press "input" button which doesn't work consistently. After powering up you have press input repeatedly to scroll through options including radio, optical audio, coaxial audio, etc. etc. with HDMI 1 -- the most commonly used -- being the last on this list. If you switch back and forth after that, it will go to HDMI 1 first when you press input, but this resets if you power-off and back on. This is a huge and completely unneccesary hassle. There should be an option on the Home Screen which takes you to a visible menu of inputs, and you should be able to set a "favorite" here. The remote is adequate but unlighted.

OVERALL

I've highlighted some of the few weak points here, but overall this is a superb unit sometimes available at a great price (wait for a sale though the normal price is not bad), and I am very happy with it. Unless you're looking to spend $1000 plus, you won't find a better combination of sound and features. A few tweaks would put it over the top, but all things considered, I can't complain. Nice job!

"What you need to know" 2010-01-26
By H. Guesmia (McKinney TX)
Watch out!:

1- You cannot watch movies thru USB (only pix and mp3).

2- There is not one single audio out (in case the kids are sleeping and you want to use the headphones).

3- You will need to purchase a wireless bridge (> $60.00) for the internet in case you cannot use ethernet cables.

4- The 4 screws to hold the towers are not supplied (too expensive for LG!).

Bottom line, you can get a better system for the same price or less.

 "Great Product....but not flawless...." 2010-01-22
By J. Klein
This is a Great Product. I purchased it based on the reviews posted here on Amazon. Easy Setup, simple controls, loads of features are all bonuses with this system......BUT there are a couple of minor things.....I would have loved to have seen more inputs! Maybe (1) RCA and (1) Component Input would have really made this system Superb! I have my ATT UVerse receiver in HDMI Input #1 but where do I plug in the Nintendo Wii?? There is no way to do it....and that is a problem because now the Wii is on a separate TV input with the sound from the TV speakers. As far as the Netflix, Cinema Now and other internet features....these are great and they all came alive with minimal setup. But (this has nothing to do with LG) the Netflix and CinemaNow are still in their infancy and do not offer alot of titles....especially Netflix. Overall, a very good system with great sound and very easy to use. Also, almost forgot, the IPOD dock is an excellent little feature and worked flawlessly.

For $99 this blu-ray player shows awesome HD movies on my 42in. wide screen TV. I am currently using it as the DVD player for my Sony home theater surround sound system. It works great. No cpmplaints about picture or sound quality. I have used it for over a month now and it has played all blu-ray movies I've rented from Netflix.

I downloaded an update for my player and since then it wont play dvds, LG wont admit to it being their fault even though the same thing has happened to many other customers so they want you to pay them to fix it. Customer service was horrible I will never buy LG products ever again.

I also have 2 Samsung Blu Ray palyers. This is for a bedroom and you can't beat the price. Also looked at a Vizio at Costco which looked like a piece of junk
